Nevermind. The vibrator works fine. I'm an idiot. However, in my defense, those "+/-" battery signs need to be bigger. I have better than 20/20 vision, and even I was squinting.

Still, though. I'm an idiot.

Road trip!

So, we’re just outside the Sims campground, a small and very pretty Corps of Engineers campground that we found by accident while looking for a snarf. And then I discover that it’s a historically significant place and the CCC has built a little trail linking an old sawmill, an old campground, and the first major project ever completed in California for the 1930s New Deal–a wonderful old bridge.

I’m pleased.

Sometimes I'm too hard on my job...
Sometimes my stupid fucking job actually succeeds in turning my work-related frown upside down.

Like today, when I had to clear customs paperwork for a dildo and some anal lubricant being sent from "### Lickinghole Road" in Virgina, US to an apartment on Yonge Street in Toronto. This made me giggle for about ten minutes, earning lots of weird looks from my co-workers, who I couldn't give a flying fuck about.

In other news, I'd like to meet the person who came up with that street name and shake their hand.

Also, I'm four.

Hi I R Cranky
...and I have no idea why. Well, some idea, since it's partly hormonal (fucking hate being a girl sometimes), partly situational (haaate my body), and partly sleep-loss issues. But. Yes. Cranky, and also randomly crying.

Spent yesterday and this morning being eaten by http://tvtropes.org -- it's as bad as wikipedia.

Spent last night emphatically /not/ being eaten by the Giant Mutant Flying Stealth Ninja Attack Cricket of Doom. (Who knew crickets could /fly/? I didn't -- until this one went from my couch to the ceiling across the room in one swoop that was definitely not just a big leap because the trajectory dipped /down/ before rising again. And then it clung to my ceiling and wandered over, upside-down, to above my computer. Where I was /not/, since I had that point fled in girlish terror to the hallway, where I could see it but would have some warning if it tried to attack me. And who knew crickets could be silent? Apparently it's only the males that chirp. So maybe it wasn't a mutant, but that sounds much better.)

Spent today being miserable and cranky and crying at random things and panicing, in a "I can't /do/ this" sort of way. Mainly rrevolving around physical shit, most of which is stupid )

Woot! The Whiskeytown fires are almost contained. And a dinner party.

Contained does not mean “out.” It means “surrounded by trenches and things it can’t burn so it will burn itself out from the outside in.”

Still, the big Moon fire was contained at the weekend and the Motion Fire is 90% contained as of this morning. That’s good news! We are heading down the hill later today to do shopping since we have run out of just about everything–paper towels, bog roll, cat litter, food, photos of the day, you name it. ;) We’ll go right by that area and it will be interesting to see what’s up.

Endangered Species Chocolate: Smooth Milk Chocolate

Here is my first ever chocolate review. I had fun doing it. *grin*

ChocolateThere are a whole series of Endangered Species bars of chocolate, but I am on a quest for great milk and great white chocolate so that shaped my picks. When trying to decide between the many varieties, I ended up dropping this one, so knowing that the next person in line would probably be disappointed with the likely result of this, I bought it. (And I dropped it when I got home, too–go me!)

The bar is 3.5 ounces, or 85 g. .The outer wrapping is kind of an unexciting cafe au lait color, with a photograph of a sad-looking sea otter. A lime green band notes that 10% of the net profits from this manufacturer are donated “to help support species, habitat and humanity.” It also boasts a 52% cocoa content, which I knew from the start was too dark to hit the spot for a great milk chocolate. Were it not for my attack of dropsy this likely wouldn’t have been my first choice, simply because I found the wrapping rather dull and figured it would be too dark.

Rude People.
I've just upset my mother-in-law and thereby my girlfriend by asking that our dog and hers go outside.
Mil didn't want her dog outside so she said, "Dippy's sitting very quietly". I insisted the dogs go outside. My girlfriend said to me it wasn't important. Is it not my house too? If I don't want the dogs climbing on MY furniture isn't that my right? I still insisted and said if Dippy didn't go out she would not be welcome here anymore. Our dog is very well behaved normally but goes nuts when Dippy is here.

Boy... I am the biggest bitch in the world apparently. Mil said to put her dog in the car (rather than run around our secure large backyard with our dog).
I am upset at people who don't respect your stuff. When MIL goes I am sure I'll get an earful.

Golf question
Hi all! This is for a little article I'm writing...what is the term in golfing where you hit the ball into the scrub or a trench and can't get the thing back out again?

In Fredericksburg, there's a golf course that is all mixed in with General Lee's civil war trenches. I figured I'd end the writing with something like "Don't hit your ball into the scrub!" but wanted to get the real term if possible. :)

Cheers :)

20 July 2008

Another week has gone by, not quite as frustrating as the one prior, but given that I’m starting to get backache and twitchy wrists/elbows, it’s time for a change! To that end we are trying to finally leave on the little road trip we first started trying to leave on two weeks ago. ;)

My primary activities for the week have been (a) writing on my current contract and (b) programming. The rework of Markeroni is going as slow as molasses but I also think I’m starting to get over the hump. I have decided that after meeting my other obligations this morning, today is the last day I’m going to work as intensely on this project until August.

Popping up for air

The last several days, I’ve been doing some pretty intense programming and writing, so I haven’t had much time for other stuff, like living. But we’re fine. Getting a bit stale, so we’re planning a road trip/mega-snarfari for next week. I figured we ought to go somewhere, I’m running out of photos of the day. ;)

Estimated containment date for the fires is 15th August.

Don is getting there with the internet telephony.

It’s cooled down considerably, the smoke is awful, and it’s quite windy. I can’t ride my bike now because both front and rear brake pads decided to wear down simultaneously. So one of the errands we need to run in Redding is to find the bike shop and get new pads.

Weaverville Fourth of July parade–continued

As promised, here are some more parade piccies. :)

This group surprised me! A rather good bagpipe band marched and piped their way down the street.

Later, they were to be heard making tunes in and around the city.

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

I’m not sure who this lady was, but she looked like a mountie and was perched way up high on that horse.

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

Not to be outdone, the Army towed a helicopter down the street. Here is photographic proof.

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

Then came the monocyclists, whirling and twirling! Really excellent.

I chatted to this kid a bit later; it took him three weeks to get the knack. Apparently you put all your weight on the seat, not on the pedals like with a bicycle.

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

This man was leading a mule train, presumably as a living history exhibit. He took them round in some really tight circles.

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

There were a bunch of old cars tootling away, some with “California historic vehicle” plates. Primer is good too. ;)

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

The Clampers had a purple fire truck, because they could! Alas, I couldn’t find it later–I wanted to talk to their plaque-master.

Weaverville Fourth of July Parade

And finally, another round of cheers and appreciation for the other kind of hero–our firefighters.

Details of XV1000 Virago valve timing

Let’s examine the Virago’s valve timing in detail.

We’ll start with the basic characteristics of this four-stroke engine.

The Virago engine is a four-stroke ‘Otto cycle’ engine.

(Trivia: Nikolaus Otto demonstrated this kind of engine in 1876. (Wikipedia article)

Four strokes of the piston (up-to-down, down-to-up, up-to-down, and down-to-up) are required for each complete engine cycle.

The four strokes are (in order): intake, compression, power, and exhaust.

Quite possibly not a good idea

There’s a time when you just crave something different to eat, especially when you’re not into your work or the going is slow or you’re bored. Then the idea hits you: Chinese food! And before you know it you’re setting off at what looks like dusk because of the heavy smoke, on a quest for goodies.

Let me describe it for you, because I’m not about to do it again in a hurry. It’s an hour before sunset, but you can’t see the sun. The air is a weird grayish-orange color, and it smells funny. After a while your nose starts to itch and your eyes to water just a bit, so you close your visor, and now your vision is cut but at least you can’t smell the nasty stale odor of burned pine…as much.

You can just about see to the next curve, and all the oncoming cars have their headlamps on.

Weaverville Fourth of July parade

I headed down to Weaverville for their Fourth of July celebration. For once the smoke had cleared, leaving nice blue skies and large crowds–more people than I would have expected, so there was a very nice buzz.

This was my first ever Fourth of July parade. Normally we don’t do it because of the crowds, but the fireworks were canceled and I wanted to do something to mark the day. This was fun–I’ll definitely do it again!

President Bush, Governor Schwarzenegger and various other dignitaries are coming up to assess the fires today. One of the Redding Journal journalists is allowed to come-with and is updating on his Blackberry.

I’m not going to go down to Redding–the air has been nasty for two days now and is going to be worse down there–but you can compulsively hit reload here if you want to get updates. (Though it must be said it’s not been updated since 11:30 and the comments are full of idiot trolls.)

You need to stop being The Dude.
Question: Would you kick a girl out of bed for calling you "Dude" during sex?

Sub-question: Do you think it's stupid or weird that part of my criteria for my next relationship will be "Must not have problem with me slipping up and calling her 'Dude' in bed"?

Sub-sub-question: Does anyone know where I put my special edition DVD copy of The Big Lebowski? I can't find it *anywhere*. This is fucking *tragic*.

There’s this scene in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome where a, shall we say height-challenged character ends up in the pig pit. The methane from pig emissions was used to power the Thunderdome, and this was a most unpleasant fate.

I feel a certain empathy with that guy every time we run the macerator on the black tank.

random commentary update thing
home. exhausted. hurty.

have book in brain that can't decide whether to be a YA book or a murder mystery. (not that one can't have both, I suppose.) it might suck but at least can't be worse than emo sparkly psychic vampires who drive volvos and go to high school. one of these days I might even get around to writing it.

(speaking of writing, I might actually get around to posting a fic that's been promised Real Soon Now for the past, oh, ten years. yay me. unless I decide it sucks horribly and should never see the light of day.)

feeling v insecure about everything (not unusual) and close to crying about everything (also not) and thoroughly exhausted.

my frends are awesome.

in wow news, my warrior has a mount now (new patch = mounts at lvl 30 instead of 40) trying to decide if it's worth getting one for my shaman (qualifies, but also, ghost wolf makes it less necessary; warriors have /no/ spood beests, which is vexing.) want flying / epic flyng for jhalia, but those are a long way off (six levels and an impossible amount of monies).

time for bed now. feel like I'm doing nothing but failing-to-sleep at night and failing-to-be-awake during the daytime, which is somewhat of a sucky combination. sometimes, what I do feels like Surviving. sometimes, not even that.

The birds

In the space of roughly half an hour, enjoying my morning coffee outside:

A nuthatch or tree creeper bobbled up and down a Christmas tree

Two flycatchers perched on two adjacent fence posts and looked at me

A yellow-bellied bird perched on the wire between said fence posts and looked at me

Another bird, possibly a swallow, perched on the apex of a twig in the tree opposite…and looked at me.

A bird that looked like a size-large blue tit puttered around in the tree, feeding its equally size-large, flying-capable baby.

That is all.

Well, I went to the dr. today and it didn't kill me.  Yeah that's right, I've joined the ranks of soon-to-be-insured.... doctor-going ... normal people.  :oy:

I officially have Sinusitis (as I suspected).  I'm now on:

An antibiotic

Prescription strength Ibuprofin

Mucinex

and Cortizone/steroid treatment (starting tomorrow).

Already the mucinex is working... albeit it a little too well.  I think I shall only be taking it right before bed.  The good news is that the gunk in my eyes is dried up... bad news is they're now a bit toooo dry.
But the lump in my throat is greatly reduced thank heavens.

I go back in 2 weeks for a followup.  I love this doctor btw.  Shes at CareNow which is basically a Doc-in-the-box.  But she's FANTASTIC.  She actually listens to me when I come in, doesn't shove my weight in my face like other dr.s do. Once my insurance is completely in I'll continue to see her I think.   It's so hard for me to find a doctor I'm comfortable with.

In other news...

No other news really.  Work is great, I love it!  It's the kind of place where I can say, "hey... I need to leave early to go to the doctor" and the response is... "omg what's wrong??" instead of "what do you mean leave early?"

It's wonderful.  As sick as I felt today, I never once considered calling in. even though I know it would have been ok.  :happy sigh:

And now, back to Boston Legal, Ibuprofin.. and then.... bed.

Field Museum on free admission day = fuckton of kids. Most of whom were hyper, badly supervised, oblivious, and annoying as heck. (Plus, I'm kind of on the cranky side right now.) OTOH, the mythical creatures exhibit gave me a few ideas, and it was, y'know, free, so.

Seeing a few friendy types this evening, going home tomorrow, shoulder /still/ fucking hurts, want to stab people (generally speaking) in the eye. with a spork. also, am drugged (pain meds ftw) and exhausted. sigh.

(Also also, I haven't had lunch yet, but food doesn't sound good. which is a little... disturbing.)
